Coming Sept. 29!
Canada's first independent news venture dedicated to competition and monopoly issues
In their 2024 book on Canada’s monopoly problem, The Big Fix, competition experts Denise Hearn and Vass Bednar made a number of recommendations on how to remedy the corporate concentration issues dogging the country. Among them:
“Dedicated Reporting on Corporate Power - While media coverage of competition issues in Canada has improved over time, to our knowledge, there is no single reporter in Canada that consistently focuses on market power and competition policy. Each major newspaper should have one reporter fully dedicated to reporting on these issues. There are a range of examples in the United States at Bloomberg, Politico, MLex, The Information, Vox/Recode, and others. Developing these beats will help to produce important storytelling that is critical to engage the public’s attention and to maintain more scrutiny on exploitative firm behaviour. Financing these positions may necessitate alternative forms of financial support outside of the traditional news media, such as a mix of non-profit, government, and reader-funded support.”
On Sept. 29, we’re finally answering that call with Do Not Pass Go – an independent reader-funded journalism venture dedicated to reporting on competition, corporate concentration and consumer affairs. Be sure to tune in for the big launch!
