Same here. I think for me, it was something that someone said about how we've had this wave of "don't buy American" in Canada, but we don't have a ton of good alternatives for buying Canadian. So, I have no idea if this is going to work, but I thought it was a decent way to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak.
I will join. I tried in vain to interest The Canadian Press into helping create just such an app shortly after Meta got snippy and petulant about being asked to contribute a tiny amount of the ad revenue it siphons out of Canada back into this country's journalistic needs.
First I’ve heard of this app, but I recognize a bunch of the people on the board. It looks like the platform is decentralized like Mastodon or Bluesky, but I’m not sure which protocol it uses. I’ll need to do some research.
A surprising comment was that the platform refuses bit accounts. When done properly, bots are very useful. Eg— tracking weather, or stock prices, or even breaking news.
I'm hopeful that perhaps it can indeed be something better, but I'm also not sure if anything on the internet can escape the pull of Godwin's Law (especially now).
