One item I'd like the competition bureau or CRTC to look at is the different pricing of Sportsnet and TSN on cable vs. direct subscription in their apps. Cogeco has a sports cable addon that includes Sportsnet and TSN for $22 per month. This includes use of their apps. Both Sportsnet and TSN charge $29.99 per month for a direct subscription to their apps. That's $38 per month more.
By comparison, Crave charges the same price for a cable addon or direct subscription.
The downside with cable is that you also have to pay for cable, with all the fun additions that entails. I have cable for my mom (a senior), for example, and it’s $25 for the “skinny basic” package plus literally $20 for the necessary hardware. *That* is something I’d like the CRTC to look at.
I think the price difference is to discourage people from cutting the cord. If the cost of basic cable plus sports is about the same as direct subscription then why cut the cord.
There are a couple of other telecom competition issues. The first being if you want IPTV, and that's all you can get these days, then you also have to get your internet from the same provider. The second issue is with 5G home internet. In the states it is growing rapidly as T-Mobile and Verizon are pushing it. In Canada not so much. Could it be because the wireless business is controlled by the same companies that control the wired internet business?
